Less than one week to go until ‘Build the Future’ - CDF’s first ever Built Environment Careers Fair

On Wednesday 1st November 2023, local businesses will join forces with the public authority and the Royal Geographical Society to deliver the Cambridge Development Forum’s first ever Built Environment Careers Fair.

As part of the CDF’s efforts to address the pressing need for town planners, ‘Build the Future: All you need to know about a career in the built environment’ will showcase the wealth of opportunities within Planning and the Built Environment in a series of talks accompanied by an exhibition of stalls where attendees will be able to connect with local businesses and the local authority.

The Fair, which will take place from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Leys School, Cambridge, will provide careers advisors, teachers, parents and students from Year 10 up to undergraduate level with a comprehensive understanding of the Built Environment's critical role addressing contemporary challenges, including housing shortages, sustainability imperatives and rapid urban transformation. Attendees will learn about innovative local projects and make use of invaluable networking opportunities.

The CDF is particularly excited to welcome Professor Joe Smith, Director of the Royal Geographical Society, to the Fair, who will be speaking about the benefits of studying Geography and the dynamic career pathways that it can lead to within the sector.

Other organisations represented include WSP, Vistry Group, Stantec, Bidwells and the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service.

‘Build the Future’ is an inspiring example of leading forces across the local planning sector coming together to address the current shortage of town planners in Cambridgeshire, at the same time as supporting the region’s youth.

“There is an increasing demand for town planners that is far from being met. This careers fair will help to close this skills gap and unleash the potential of Cambridge as a hub for future development,” says Lord Andrew Lansley, Chair of Cambridgeshire Development Forum.
